Vegetation Index

A mathematical formula applied to satellite bands to measure specific plant properties.

Vegetation indices are numerical indicators computed from satellite spectral bands that quantify vegetation properties. The most common ones measure: health/vigor (NDVI, EVI), water content (NDWI, NDMI), chlorophyll (GNDVI), and soil exposure (BSI, SAVI).

Each index has strengths and limitations. NDVI is the most universal but saturates in dense canopies. EVI handles high biomass better. SAVI works best on sparse vegetation. Using multiple indices together provides a more complete picture of crop health.
