SAVI (Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index)
Minimizes soil brightness influence in areas with sparse vegetation cover.
SAVI adds a soil adjustment factor (L) to the NDVI formula: SAVI = (NIR - Red) × (1 + L) / (NIR + Red + L), where L typically equals 0.5. This correction reduces the influence of soil background reflectance on vegetation measurements.
SAVI is especially valuable for monitoring young crops, recently planted fields, and semi-arid regions where bare soil is visible between plants. As canopy closure increases, SAVI and NDVI values converge.
