EVI (Enhanced Vegetation Index)

An improved vegetation index that corrects for atmospheric and soil background effects.

EVI was developed by Huete et al. (2002) to improve on NDVI by reducing atmospheric and soil noise. The formula is EVI = 2.5 × (NIR - Red) / (NIR + 6×Red - 7.5×Blue + 1). It uses the blue band to correct for aerosol scattering.

EVI performs better than NDVI in high-biomass regions where NDVI saturates, and in areas with significant atmospheric contamination. It is the standard product of NASA's MODIS sensor and is well-supported by Sentinel-2.

How Messier76 Uses This

Messier76 calculates EVI as part of the extended vegetation indices suite, providing more accurate readings in dense crop canopies.
