NDWI (Normalized Difference Water Index)

Measures water content in vegetation canopies to detect drought stress.

NDWI uses green and near-infrared bands to assess water content in plant canopies. The formula is NDWI = (Green - NIR) / (Green + NIR). Positive values indicate high water content, while negative values suggest water stress.

NDWI is particularly useful for irrigation management and drought monitoring. It responds faster to water stress than NDVI, making it an early warning indicator. It was developed by McFeeters (1996) and adapted for vegetation by Gao (1996).
