NDMI (Normalized Difference Moisture Index)

Detects moisture levels in vegetation using shortwave infrared data.

NDMI uses NIR and shortwave infrared (SWIR) bands to assess canopy moisture content. The formula is NDMI = (NIR - SWIR) / (NIR + SWIR). Values above 0.2 indicate healthy moisture levels, while values below 0 suggest drought stress.

Unlike NDWI, NDMI specifically targets liquid water in leaf tissue using the SWIR band (B11 on Sentinel-2), making it more sensitive to internal plant water content. This makes it excellent for detecting irrigation needs before visible wilting occurs.
